One of Carson's most distinct features is its diversity. The city is roughly one-quarter each Hispanic, African American, white, and Asian/ Pacific Islander. This last group's vast majority are Filipinos who settled as early as the 1920s as farmworkers, U.S. military recruits, entrepreneurs, medical professionals, and other laborers, filling the economic needs of the Los Angeles region. This vibrant community hosts fiestas like the Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture and has produced local community heroes, including “Uncle Roy” Morales and “Auntie Helen” Summers Brown. Filipino students of the 1970s organized to gain college admissions, establish ethnic studies, and foster civic leadership, while Filipino businesses have flourished in Carson, San Pedro, Wilmington, Long Beach, and the surrounding communities. Carson is recognized nationally as a Filipino American destination for families and businesses, very much connected to the island homeland.

about the authors
Roselyn Estepa Ibanez is the current Chairwoman of the Board of the Filipino American Library. She completed her graduate program with honors in the Masters in Public Policy and Administration at CSU Long Beach. Rose has continued to be a community activist for over 30 years, from student organizing as one of the founding members of UC Irvine Kababayan to advocating for immigrant and human rights work as the Los Angeles Chapter Chairperson of the National Filipino Immigrant Rights Organization (NFIRO) and a member of the Filipino Civil Rights Advocates (FILCRA) and a Planning Commissioner for the City of Carson as former Councilwoman Lorelie Olaes' appointee. She was a former senior field deputy for Los Angeles County Board of Supervisor Gloria Molina for 8 years, as a Senior Field Deputy for the east County area of the First District. She is currently employed with the City of Los Angeles Housing Department. Rose also sits on the Los Angeles County Community Action Board (CAB) appointed by Supervisor Gloria Molina to represent the public sector of the First District, which discusses the allocation of Community Service Block Grants (CSBG) for low-income families. Rose is a mother of two beautiful and talented young women, Gabriela and Mikaela, married to a life long partner and another community activist, Florante, and are new grandparents to, Cleto BaoQuy Ibanez Nguyenphuoc.
Florante Peter Ibanez became involved in community activism after high school. He served as the Director of Community Services for the Associated Student Body of Cal State University Dominguez Hills while a student and later worked at the UCLA Asian American Studies Center in the early 1970s and was a co-founder of UCLA Samahang Pilipino. He was encouraged to return to school and co-founded the UC Irvine's Kababayan where he also pushed for creation of the Cross Cultural Center as part of the Third World Students Coalition. He received his BA with the Comparative Cultures Program from UC Irvine in 1977. While a student he also became an activist of the Union of Democratic Filipinos (KDP) who opposed the Marcos Dictatorship in the Philippines and called for social change in the U.S. He has been a AFSCME labor organizer, Kayumanggi Lions Club president, father (most recently also a grandpa), Hula Halau 'O Lilinoe - kane hula dancer, computer technician, and musician at Light and Life Christian Fellowship-West in Long Beach. In 2006 he received both his Masters in Library Information Science and Masters in Asian American Studies from UCLA. Florante has worked at Loyola Law School since 1992 and now is their Manager of Library Computer Services. He also teaches Filipino American Studies at Loyola Marymount University (LMU). He volunteers as Webmaster and Archivist for the Filipino American Library and serves on the board of Fil-Am ARTS. Previously he served on the SIPA Board for six years and as a City of Carson Environmental Commissioner for four years. Recently Florante was elected as the President of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA), and represents them on the Steering Committee for the Joint Conference of Librarians of Color (JCLC2012) and was selected to be an American Library Association (ALA) Emerging Leader in 2007.
